Terrarium Care Guide

A simple guide to help you keep your terrarium healthy and thriving.

Terrariums are designed to be a low-maintenance mini ecosystems, but a little care will keep them thriving for years to come.

Light

  • Place your terrarium in bright indirect light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, especially through windows, as this can overheat and burn plants.

  • Offices or darker rooms may benefit from a small grow light.

Watering

Terrariums need very little water. Over-watering is a common problem with terrariums.

  • most closed terrariums only need watering every month or two.

  • if the glass looks completely dry for long periods, or the soil dry lightly spray a couple of times.

  • if there is heavy condensation all day, leave the lid open for a few hours.

  • please use Reverse Osmosis (RO), springwater or de-chlorinated water for your terrarium. (All our terrariums come with a spray bottle containing RO water).

Tips:

  • light condensation in the morning = good

  • constant foggy or heavy condensation on the glass=too wet

  • no condensation and dry moss, plants or soil=too dry.

Open Terrariums

  • Water lightly when the top layer of soil is dry.

  • Typical frequency: every one-two weeks, depending on airflow and temperature.

Ventilation

Even closed terrariums need occasional ventilation.

  • Open the lid for a few minutes when you water.

  • If you see excessive condensation running down the glass, open the lid to release humidity

  • If plants look dry or curled, close the lid more often

  • Closed terrariums prefer humidity and to usually stay sealed unless watering.

Cleaning the Glass

Clear glass helps your plants photosynthesize.

  • Wipe the inside with a soft cloth or paper towel

  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners

  • If algae forms, gently scrub the affected area with a cotton swab

Pruning & Maintenance

Plants grow slowly in terrariums but still need occasional attention.

  • Trim back plants touching the glass

  • Remove dead leaves to prevent mould

  • If moss lifts or browns, mist lightly and press it back into place. Moss may naturally change colour slightly depending on the humidity and lighting.

Common Issues & Fixes

Cause: Overwatering or too much heat
Fix: Vent the terrarium for a few hours and reduce watering amount

Plants Turning Yellow

Cause: Poor airflow or excessive moisture
Fix: Open the lid more often; remove yellow leaves

Dry or Crispy Leaves

Cause: Low humidity or under-watering
Fix: Mist lightly and ensure terrarium is not in direct sun

Mould Growth

Cause: Stagnant air or overwatering
Fix: Remove affected parts, air out the terrarium, reduce watering

Long-Term Health Tips

  • Rotate the terrarium occasionally for even light

  • Keep soil free of pests and debris
